Chaser's Quest - Science Fiction Ship Short Story

The ship was cold, much colder than it had been yesterday. Ice particles floated throughout the entire bridge, kissing the crew within with soft reminders of their predicament. There was a growing chill in the air, another constant reminder to the crew of all the mishaps that had occurred over the last several weeks.

Still, the Human Alliance fighter ship Chaser and its crew pushed onward toward a destination that seemed farfetched with each passing day, with each kiss of the ice particles, and each chill they felt running down their spines.

Captain Geoffrey Norris could hear the faint humming of the converters as they tried almost unsuccessfully to supply the ship and its six-member crew with conditions as close to adequate as possible. As the ice crystals hinted, they weren't doing a very good job. Remnants of the crystals attached themselves to their control panels and stations, giving everything a shiny and new look despite the constant decay and the remains of a battle long since over.
